Ikea Duktig Kitchen Hack

One of the things I love about having girls is that I get to choose all the girly toys I would have liked and actually that I'd secretly like to play with too haha. Some of the toy kitchens I had seen online were nice but either too overpriced or just looked a bit too tacky for me.  I'd seen the Ikea kitchen set before but because it was so plain it never really caught my eye, that was until I took to Pintrest and found loads of Duktig kitchen hacks. I was so excited to start designing my own. Unfortunately it was sold out at the time. Being impatient as ever I went on Ebay to see if anyone local was selling one. I managed to win one for the same price but it literally had ALL the accessories like the pots, pans and porcelain dishes and all the food.

So once I start a project I get a bit overexcited/impatient and go all in. As soon as my husband bought the kitchen back home (around 9pm) I got to work.

What I used:

  • I bought Marble contact paper from Wilko for the counter top.  you Will obviously need scissors and a scarple knife to cut and an old plastic card to smooth it over.
  • Gold Paint for the sink, tap and handles. I bought the plasti-kote gold metallic spray.
  • Primer. I bought Wilkos own brand spray primer in white.
  • Pink paint. Plasti-kote Cameo Pink in a Satin finish.
  • Handles. I orginlly spray painted the handles gold but I found the paint would wear very easily so I picked up Ikea Hishult handles which are £9 for 2. I picked up 2 packs.
  • Grey paint. I bought a pot of Wilkos interior paint in a pearl grey shade.

I've seen some where people have stripped the varnish off and either painted or stained the wood. I didn't have the patience or the time since I was living in a tiny apartment at the time and only had one night. Yes I did this in ONE night, but I would really not recommend this. My little girl was so excited the next day. She was forcing me to eat and drink the pretend food she made for me when I really just wanted to sleep. Not fun.

Here is the Original Duktig kitchen.. pretty basic huh..

First I primed all the parts I would be painting over with the spray paints. The grey paint was thick enough that I didn't need to prime before painting.

The marble contact paper was the trickiest part. I left a 2 inch allowance so it would tuck under the counter. I started in the corner and gradually smoothed it down with an old store card. Bumps are inevitable, however once your done just take a pin and prick the bump and press the air out. Works like a dream to get rid of those annoying air bubbles.

Here is the finished product. Unfortunately the picture quality is a it crap as this was taken on my old phone.

I added new handles a couple of weeks later. I also found this cute wrapping paper in Clintons that had this sweet jar print. So I bought some foam board from WhSmith, cut out the jars and stuck it onto the board and nailed it into the top of the kitchen so it looks like sweet jars sitting on the shelf. I also printed off a Belle and boo image with 'Mays Kitchen' written above and used some of the foam board to sick it in the microwave window.

It really didn't cost much to do up the kitchen and its great for either boys or girls. It one of those toys that last for years, even as they grow up. I did this for my little girl when she was 2 and she still comes up to me all the time and forces me to 'eat' whatever she has cooked up in her little kitchen.
